New Law Requires Employers to Offer Paid Sick Leave


On March 18, 2020, the President signed the "Families First Coronavirus Response Act." Notably, the law requires private employers with fewer than 500 employees and all public employers to provide at least 10 days of paid sick leave to all full- and part-time employees, who are unable to work because they are (1) subject to a quarantine; (2) advised by a health-care provider to quarantine; (3) experiencing symptoms of COVID-19; (4) caring for another individual with COVID-19 or its symptoms; or (5) caring for a child whose school or child care has been cancelled. This is the first federal law to require an employer to provide paid sick leave, and those employers who don't otherwise offer sick leave would do well to implement this new law quickly.
